Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between stress, social support, self-efficacy, self-esteem and mental health in Armed Forces Nursing Academy cadets to provide the basic data for disciplinary programs. The subject of this study was 197 cadets in AFNA, during the period from May 9, 2003 to May 14, 2003. The instruments for this study were a Global of Perceived Stress, ISEL, self- efficacy (Bandura, 1977), self-esteem (Rosenburg, 1965) and Symptom Checklist-90. The data was analyzed by using SPSS Windows Version 10.0 for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. The findings of this study noted : The relation between stress and selfefficacy yielded a negative correlation. And the relation between stress and mental health yielded positive relation and the relation between social support, self-esteem and mental health yielded a negative correlation. Thus, the end results of this study depict self-efficacy as significant factor related to stress and stress, social support and self-esteem as significant factors related to mental health. Consequently, this study suggests, in order to help AFNA cadets make necessary mental health, that disciplinary programs should be managed to increase social support, self-esteem and to decrease stress by increasing self-efficacy.
